Why I March for Life
Every year at the March for Life, I march for the protection of preborn children and for a society that better supports their mothers. But this year, I have a reason to march that is very close to my heart.
I march for the rights and protection of my 7 month old daughter, and for the right of her future friends and schoolmates to be born.
I march because when she was only 6 weeks in my womb and I first heard her heartbeat, it broke my heart that in most states it would be legal to kill her.
Not only would it have been legal, it would have been encouraged by many.
You see, I got pregnant out of wedlock. My now-husband and I had only been dating for 6 months. According to much of the world, it would have been “foolish” to get married so soon, and even more “reckless” to keep her.
According to the world, the “right” thing to do would have been to kill the perfect baby girl who is sleeping peacefully in my arms right now.
But I march because the ways of the world are not God’s way, and God’s way is never to kill one of his precious little ones.
I march because my family is a testimony to the joy and peace that can come when you swim against the tide, when you stand your ground against a culture of death and hold your head high through all the chaos and confusion that comes from announcing your pregnancy with a man you hadn’t even known for a year.
I march because I know the difference it made when the first words out of my husband’s mouth when he saw that pregnancy test were, “I’m a dad!” and not, “What are you gonna do about it?”
I march because every night when we’re sitting on the floor in the living room, playing with our little girl and hearing her laughter light up the house, I’m grateful that we said yes to life.
I’m grateful for the beautiful, abundant life that comes when a man and a woman say YES to the life that God has given them.
I march because I know the power of stories like these, and I believe in the power of loe, compassion, and real education to change hearts and minds.
This is why I march, and why I will continue to march, year after year, until every life is protected and valued in our society.
